1. Introduction
===============
The Intel(R) Desktop Control Center allows you to modify cooling
parameters to ensure system stability, optimize performance, and control
cooling/acoustic characteristics. You may perform stress tests to verify
system and setting stability and conduct performance testing to measure the
impact of system configuration and setting modifications. The system gauges
provide real time feedback of relevant information so you can observe the
effects of various changes.

This README file contains the latest information for the Intel Desktop
Control Center v4.0 beta release software application.

You must be logged in as an administrator before you run Intel Desktop
Control Center.

======================
2. System Requirements
======================

Hardware Requirements
---------------------
The Intel Desktop Control Center v4.1 supports the Intel(R)
Desktop Boards DX38BT and DX48BT2.

Earlier Intel Extreme Edition desktop boards, such as the
Intel(R) Desktop Board D975XBX and D975XBX2 are NOT supported.

A video graphics card with hardware-based support for Microsoft*
DirectX* 10 is highly recommended.

CPU overclocking features are only available with Intel(R) Extreme Edition
processors. Intel Desktop Control Center v4.0 will run on
non-Extreme Edition processors, but the CPU overclocking
features will not be enabled.

Operating System
----------------
Intel Desktop Control Center software should be installed only on
systems based on Intel Desktop Boards with one of the following
operating systems:

 - Microsoft Windows* Vista* operating systems (32-bit version)
for Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise.

 - Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Home Edition with Service
   Pack 2 and up.

 - Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) operating system
   with Update Rollup 2.

Note: If your system has other applications running that could
prevent a system reboot, please close those applications
before starting an installation to protect yourself from loss
      of any unsaved data.

Note: The Windows Vista Starter Edition is not supported. Also,
all 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows XP
Professional operating systems are not supported at this time.
Earlier operating system versions of Windows 95, 98, 98 SE,
NT, 2000, ME, and Server 2003 are not supported.

Note: Computers based on the Microsoft Windows XP operating system
also require installation of the Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0 Redistribution Package software or later.

Note: The Intel(R) Desktop Control Center v4.0 is not backwards
compatible with any previous versions of Intel Desktop Control Center.

BIOS Requirements
-----------------
You must use BIOS version 1507 or newer for your Intel(R) Desktop Board
DX38BT and DX48BT2.

To access the latest BIOS version, go to the BIOS download site:
  http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/DX38BT/tools.htm
  http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/DX48BT2/tools.htm

Display Configuration
---------------------
The minimum supported display configuration is 1024 x 768 pixels with 16-bit
color or higher.

Available Addressable System Memory
-----------------------------------
System resources and hardware (such as PCI and PCI Express*) require
physical memory address locations that can reduce available addressable
system memory. This could result in a reduction of as much as 1 GB or
more of physical addressable memory being available to the operating
system and applications, depending on the system configuration and
operating system.

=============================
3. Known Issues and Solutions
=============================

- The system window reports only half of the available L2 cache on
   Intel(R) QX9650 processors.
STATUS: will not fix. The L2 cache field will be removed in a future
           build.

- The system window reports Intel(R) QX9650 processor incorrectly as "Intel
Pentium(R) III Xeon processor, Stepping 6"
STATUS: will fix in a future release.
WORKAROUND: run the Intel CPU Identification utility to see the most
detailed and accurate information about your Intel processor:
	       http://downloadcenter.intel.com/detail_desc.aspx?agr=n&productid=1881&dwnldid=7838

- Fans may stop spinning and fan speed monitoring may become unreliable
when duty cycle is set to lower than 43%.
STATUS: will not fix. This is a limitation of the voltage variance
and pulse modulation methods of fan speed control.

- MCH fan does not appear in Intel Desktop Control Center.
STATUS: will not fix. The MCH fan header cannot be controlled or
monitored on the Intel Desktop Boards DX38BT and DX48BT2. Any fan connected
to this header will run at 100% duty cycle.

- If the Intel Desktop Control Center console is moved from its default
position, palettes may open partially or completely off the screen.
STATUS: will fix in a future release.
WORKAROUND: either close and reopen the application or change the screen
               resolution.

- Intel Desktop Control Center will only run on the user profile that
was used to install the application.
STATUS: will fix in a future release. An error message will display
stating that the service is already being used by another
	   application.

- When manually adjusting processor, memory, and bus settings, the system
will unexpectedly reboot if values are selected that exceed the stable
   limitations of the installed hardware.
WORKAROUND: manually adjust settings one value at a time to minimize the
	       frequency of this issue.

- Average processor utilization may exceed 10% when the Intel Desktop
Control Center is installed on Microsoft Windows Vista and the
application is open and the PC is sitting idle.
STATUS: Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 is scheduled to contain performance
improvements for the Windows Presentation Foundation.
Intel will also continue to seek performance improvements
in the Intel Desktop Control Center source code.
WORKAROUND: CPU utilization may be reduced by doing one or more
               of the following things:
               - Replace the video graphics card with a model that
supports Microsoft* DirectX* 10 in hardware.
               - Disable the "aero" effect in Vista:
START > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM AND MAINTENANCE >
PERFORMANCE INFORMATION AND TOOLS > ADVANCED TOOLS >
ADJUST THE APPEARANCE AND PERFORMANCE OF WINDOWS and
then select ADJUST FOR BEST PERFORMANCE > OK

- The Intel Desktop Control Center console may take up to 20 seconds to
appear after double-clicking the desktop icon.
STATUS: will not fix. Microsoft Windows continues to load critical
files in the background after the Windows desktop is displayed.
The Intel Desktop Control Center console will display within 10
seconds after all of the necessary Windows files have loaded.
NOTE: during the first two minutes after the Windows desktop
appears, CPU utilization will also be higher as Windows
continues to load files in the background.
WORKAROUND: after rebooting the PC and the Windows desktop displays,
wait 1 minute before launching Intel Desktop Control
               Center.

- The Intel Desktop Control Center console may take up to 75 seconds to
appear after double-clicking the desktop icon when Intel(R) Desktop
   Utilities are installed (Vista only).
STATUS: under investigation. Primarily occurs when the Intel Desktop Control Center
is launched right after a Vista reboot. After the 75 second startup delay,
           both applications will run simultaneously.

- Changes to the Host Clock Frequency do not take effect until the PC is
rebooted. This also causes the CPU speed to remain unchanged on the
console until the PC is rebooted.
STATUS: will fix in a future release
WORKAROUND: reboot the PC after changing the Host Clock Frequency.

- The CPU temperature gauge moves toward the red color as numeric
   temperature decreases.
STATUS: works as designed. Some Intel processors report a relative
rather than absolute temperature. These CPUs are auto-detected by the
Intel Desktop Control Center and the CPU temperature
gauge displays a "T" next to the numeric value instead of "C"
for Celsius or "F" for Fahrenheit. "T" stands for "thermal
margin" and represents the number of degrees the processor
has before it throttles back performance to prevent overheating.
This throttling point is arbitrarily assigned the value of zero
degrees. The farther away from zero, the cooler the processor
is running. For example, a reading of 4 degrees T means the
processor is only 4 degrees away from throttling itself back to
prevent thermal damage (critical situation). A reading of 80
degrees T indicates 80 degrees of thermal margin before the
processor shuts down (safe situation). When temperature is
displayed in thermal margin units, higher numbers are better in
	   terms of processor health.
