Getting Started
Connect your camera to your Mac via USB or through wired or wireless LAN (using a wireless transmitter) and launch Sofortbild.
The application consists of a main window with a large image viewer, a toolbar with buttons for the most frequently used functions, a status bar on the top and a settings bar on the bottom of the image viewer and an Inspector and preferences window. When the image viewer displays an image, the main window's bottom bar shows generic image details like file name and size and image type and dimensions.
Switch on your camera and set it to PTP mode (on selected models). Sofortbild will automatically detect the camera (if the model is supported) and will display static information like camera model, lens name, focal length, focus mode and battery status in the status bar. All major camera settings are shown in the settings bar.
Grab your camera, frame the photograph with the desired subject and take a picture. Sofortbild will automatically transfer the image file to your hard disk and show the picture in the image viewer. You can zoom in and out, move the image around and show the image in its full size. You can even view the image in full screen.
Open the Inspector and analyze the image histogram. You can choose between several histogram modes. The Inspector shows all meta data that is contained in the image file. You can click on the different category buttons to view the desired kind of meta data. If your camera model has a built-in or attached GPS receiver, the Inspector will also show the location where the picture was taken in a map.
Set your camera's release mode to continuous high speed if you are shooting in a situation where you want to take pictures at the camera's maximum speed. You can take as many pictures as the camera's built-in memory can hold. Sofortbild will transfer all captured pictures in the background for you.
Click on the "Capture" button in the main window's toolbar or select "Capture Picture" from the "Device" menu. Sofortbild will remotely take a picture, transfer the image file to your Mac and show the image in the viewer. If you have an Apple Remote you can instead click on the remote's "Play" button.
Set the camera's shooting mode to "Manual". On the camera body change the shutter speed and aperture. Sofortbild will instantly update both values in the settings bar. Change the shutter speed again and watch the exposure value in the application's status bar. A value greater than zero means the picture will be overexposed, a value less than zero means the picture will be underexposed.
In Sofortbild's settings bar, select a different value for the shutter speed and watch the exposure value. Try to find a value so that the exposure value is zero. Press and hold the command key and press "R". Sofortbild will take another picture with a correct exposure.
For information on the remaining settings and further features like self timer, bracketing, interval shooting, high dynamic range imaging and auto import in Aperture, iPhoto and Lightroom, please refer to the full feature list.
